Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Alabama State Troopers are investigation the crash of a 1989 Volvo Toter Wednesday night at 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of Highways 13 and 278.
The vehicle was traveling north on Highway 13 and apparently did not stop at the intersection at Highway 278. The truck traveled straight through the intersection crossing 278 and nosed into a ditch and a dirt embankment. The impact caused the small pickup riding on it's back to break loose and ram the truck cabin, tilting it forward. A passenger and escort truck driver, Max Ward, 73, Double Springs was removed first by Lynn and Delmar firemen. The extraction of the driver, Douglas Edward Upton, 58, Haleyville took about 45 minutes. Upton was flown from the scene by an Air Evac helicopter and taken to Birmingham. Upton did not survive his injuries.
